New on TikTok: ✦ EVENING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH ✦ Official Vespers with the Religious Order of Saint Mary Every day at 6:00 PM Rome Time (Live on Tik Tok) What is Vespers? Vespers is the sunset evening prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours – the official daily prayer of the Catholic Church that sanctifies every hour of the day. It is one of the two “hinge” hours (with Lauds) that even busy lay people are strongly encouraged to pray (CCC 1174–1178). Biblical Foundation • “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice” (Psalm 54:18 DRB) • “Seven times a day I have given praise to thee” (Psalm 118:164) • Jesus, Mary and the Apostles prayed the Psalms at fixed hours (Acts 3:1; Luke 1:46–55; Acts 2:42) Catechism of the Catholic Church “The mystery of Christ… permeates and transfigures the time of each day… through the Liturgy of the Hours” (CCC 1174). All priests and religious are obliged to pray it daily; the laity are “earnestly invited” to participate (CCC 1175). Brief History • Prayed by Jews in the Temple (Exodus 29:39; Daniel 6:10) • Continued by the Apostles (Acts 3:1, 10:9) • Structured by the Desert Fathers (4th century) • Codified by St. Benedict (6th century) – still the heart of monastic life today • Vatican II called it “the prayer of the whole People of God” How to Pray with Us (5 minutes is enough to start) 1.
